Recycle
The German singer and performer Claudia Splitt dissected love songs in this performance that explored the emotional reality behind the seeming shallowness of famous love songs. Claudia appeared dressed like a 1950s pin up model, draped over a large suitcase on an otherwise empty stage, reminiscent of a doll who was going through the extreme emotional states of a break up. Her song “Recycle” was studded with allusions to famous love songs, thus integrating herself into a long line of pop culture artists. On a video with German subtitles the song was repeated, and in between the numbers she approached the audience with a patter that presented her as a less artificial, somewhat more “real” persona. But of course that, too, was part of the game. The performance invited to be read as a meditation on how it has become a challenge to claim and own original, real emotions in an age of pop culture re-using and re-cycling any experience and emotion in endless feedback loops.
About the Artist
Actress and singer Claudia Splitt studied Applied Theatre Science in Gießen, Germany, and founded the Band MadonnaHipHopMassaker in 1994. In addition to her work as a singer, she has starred in numerous theatrical productions with, among others, Stefan Pucher, Tim Staffel, Rene Pollesch, John Jesurun and Lose Combo.
“Recycle” is the successor to “Feedback”; her first song and spoken word performance, produced by Volksbühne and shown at Prater, Berlin, in February 2006. Since 2007 she has worked with the band Loop Moss. She started the band as a solo performance project, using samples and quotes.
